Awards 2024-2025 HSCA School Counselor of the Year The Hawaii School Counselor Association selects from a panel of nominees to recognize "the best" of School Counseling in Hawaii. The Awards Committee culls through nominations to find who best represents what School Counselors do in personal/social, academic, and career domains.
In March 2025, HSCA was proud to announce and recognize Leka Anitema from Maui High School as our School Counselor of the Year! Her Administration team put together a schoolwide assembly to announce this award! What makes Leka our School Counselor of the Year? Here's just a taste -- there's a national push to recognize both College and Career Awareness for graduating students. While college is a great option for many, some students flourish from moving directly into a career path. Visit Maui High School, and if there's anything post-high school going on, you'll find Leka in the middle of it. She works hard to get her students ready for life beyond high school. Recognizing this paradigm shift that can bring equal success, she's rebranded her position from College and Career Counselor to Post High Counselor and rebranded her College and Career Center to the Post High Center. She promotes options for students through newsletters, emails, social media, and ESPECIALLY by meeting with students. She's also coordinated events like a hiring events for graduating seniors, a college fair, an armed forces fair, and so much more! Join HSCA in congratulating our School Counselor of the Year! As the 2024-2025 HSCA School Counselor of the Year, Leka moves forward and becomes Hawaii's nominee in the 2025-2026 ASCA (American School Counselor Association) School Counselor of the Year Award.
